"Violets for 2" was composed in 2012 on commission from the violists Ana Raquel Morais Alves and Ana Maria Couto Campos. The title plays with the dual meaning of “2” – masculine or feminine – and with the poetic lightness of the contraction p’ra, which preserves the intervallic balance of the numerical complexes that underpin the work.
The piece unfolds in three movements whose titles form, through their initial letters, the name A N A. Each movement arises from a set of numbers drawn from the performers’ and the composer’s names: true generative complexes functioning as a musical DNA, determining form, rhythm, harmony, and melody. Thus, the first movement employs the complexes [8, 3, 2] and [9, 7]; the second derives from [3, 1, 5, 6] and [4, 2, 4]; the third from [3, 1, 6, 5] and [2, 4, 3]. The number of letters in each title defines the number of sections, and each section contains a number of bars directly linked to the complexes used.
Despite this rigorous architecture, "Violets for 2" remains open to the listener’s imagination. Music, being pure abstraction, welcomes multiple readings: approaches, dialogues, reunions, metamorphoses. Each interpretation may create its own “story”, revealing the mystery suggested by the work – an intimate dance between structure and emotion, between calculation and poetry.
